Best Time to Visit Munduk: Weather Month by Month

Dry season or wet season? What the weather is really like in the Munduk highlands through the year, and how to plan your days around it.

Munduk sits high in Bali’s central mountains, and its weather is quite different from the beaches in the south. It is cooler, greener and often misty — which is a big part of its charm. Here is how the seasons play out, and when we think Munduk is at its best.

Munduk’s climate at a glance

At around 800 metres and above, Munduk is several degrees cooler than the coast. Days are usually mild and pleasant, while evenings and early mornings can be genuinely chilly — bring a jumper. Like the rest of Bali, the year divides into a dry season and a wet season, but the mountains catch more cloud and rain than the lowlands in any month.

Dry season (April to October)

This is the most popular time to visit. Trails to the waterfalls are drier and less slippery, and mornings are more often clear for views over the twin lakes. Even so, cloud tends to build over the mountains in the afternoon — so the golden rule in Munduk applies all year: do your sightseeing in the morning.

Wet season (November to March)

Rain usually comes as heavy afternoon or evening showers rather than all-day drizzle. The landscape is at its most intensely green, the Munduk waterfalls are thundering, and there are fewer visitors. Wear shoes with good grip, keep a rain jacket in the car and plan flexible days — a local driver can quickly swap a waterfall for a coffee plantation when the weather turns.

Festivals and holidays to know about

  • Nyepi (Balinese Day of Silence): usually in March. The whole island shuts down for 24 hours — no traffic, no transfers, no going out. Plan your travel days around it.
  • Galungan and Kuningan: major Balinese celebrations that follow a 210-day calendar, so dates change every year. Villages are decorated with tall bamboo penjor and temples are busy with ceremonies — a beautiful time to be in Bali.
