Hidden in a jungle valley below the village of Wanagiri, Banyumala Twin Waterfall is one of the most photogenic waterfalls in north Bali. Two main curtains of water — and dozens of smaller streams — spill down a cliff draped in moss and ferns into a clear pool you can swim in. It is only a short drive from Munduk, which makes it an easy addition to any day in the highlands.

Where is Banyumala Twin Waterfall?

Banyumala sits in Wanagiri village, on the ridge between Lake Buyan and the north coast of Bali. From Munduk it takes around 15–20 minutes by car along the lake road; from Bedugul and Ulun Danu Beratan, allow about 30 minutes. The turn-off is a small village lane, so it is easy to miss if you have not been before — one of the reasons many visitors come with a local Munduk driver.

The walk down: how difficult is it?

From the parking area, a path of concrete steps and dirt trail leads down through clove and coffee gardens into the valley. Most people reach the falls in 15–20 minutes. The walk back up is steeper and takes a little longer, so go at your own pace.

  • Difficulty: easy to moderate. Fine for most ages with reasonable fitness.
  • Footwear: sandals with grip or trail shoes. The last section can be muddy and slippery after rain.
  • Time needed: 1.5–2 hours including a swim and photos.

Swimming at Banyumala

At the base of the falls is a natural pool that is shallow near the edges and deeper under the water. The water is fresh mountain water — refreshing, and definitely cold in the morning. Changing huts are usually available, but bring a towel and a dry bag for your phone.

Best time to visit

Come in the morning. Before 10 am the valley is quiet, the light falls softly through the trees, and you are more likely to have the pool to yourself. The highlands often cloud over in the afternoon, and afternoon rain can make the trail slippery.

In the wet season (roughly November to March) the falls are at their fullest and most dramatic. In the dry season the water is clearer and the path is easier. Both are beautiful — see our guide to the best time to visit Munduk.

Local tip: Combine Banyumala with Wanagiri Hidden Hill, which is only a few minutes away. Photograph the twin lakes from the viewpoints first while the sky is clear, then cool off at the waterfall.

What to bring

  • Swimwear and a quick-dry towel
  • Shoes with grip and a light rain jacket
  • Small cash (IDR) for the entrance ticket and parking
