Munduk to Lovina: Travel Time, Route and Best Stops

Munduk and Lovina make a perfect pair: cool mountains and waterfalls in the highlands, calm black-sand beaches and sunrise boat trips on the coast. The two are close, and many travellers split their stay between them. Here is everything you need to know about the trip.

How far is Lovina from Munduk?

Lovina is around 30 km from Munduk. The drive usually takes 45 minutes to an hour, winding down from the highlands through clove gardens and villages to the coast near Banjar, then east along the main coastal road to Lovina.

Stops worth making on the way

Banjar Hot Springs

Just off the route, the natural hot springs of Banjar (Air Panas Banjar) are fed by volcanic water and set in a tropical garden. Warm pools, carved stone spouts and a relaxed village atmosphere make it a lovely hour’s stop. Bring swimwear.

Brahmavihara Arama

Nearby on a hillside, Brahmavihara Arama is the largest Buddhist monastery in Bali, with peaceful terraces, a small replica of Borobudur’s stupa and views to the sea. Visitors are welcome; dress modestly and keep your voice low.

Lovina’s sunrise dolphins

Lovina is best known for its early-morning dolphin trips. Traditional outrigger boats (jukung) leave the beach around sunrise to look for the dolphins that feed off the coast. The sea is usually calm at this hour and the light is beautiful — but sightings are never guaranteed, and it gets busy when many boats head out at once.
