The Best Things to Do in Munduk, Bali

Munduk sits high in the hills of north Bali, surrounded by clove and coffee gardens, crater lakes and some of the island’s prettiest waterfalls. It is cooler, greener and much quieter than the south — which is exactly why travellers fall for it. Here is what we recommend to our guests.

1. Chase the Munduk waterfalls

Within a short drive of the village you’ll find Munduk (Red Coral) Waterfall, Melanting, Golden Valley and Banyumala Twin Waterfall. Each has its own character, and several are linked by walking trails through village gardens. Mornings are best for soft light and empty pools.

2. Watch the sunrise over the twin lakes

Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan lie side by side in an ancient caldera. From the ridge road at Wanagiri you can see both at once — go early, before cloud rolls in from the valley.

3. Visit Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

About 30 minutes from Munduk, this lakeside water temple on Lake Beratan is one of Bali’s most recognisable sights. Arrive before 9 am for the calmest water and fewer visitors.

4. Paddle Lake Tamblingan

5. Taste Munduk coffee

The highlands grow arabica and robusta coffee alongside cloves and cacao. Many small plantations welcome visitors for a tasting and a walk through the trees.

Getting around

Public transport is limited in the highlands and the roads are steep and winding. The easiest way to explore is with a private Munduk driver who knows the trails, the weather and the best times to visit each spot.
